What did we find?
SecurityScorecard identified 34,062 IPv4 addresses on the public internet which all display the symptoms expected from an embedded device infected with Mirai IoT malware. By analyzing this data, SecurityScorecard was able to glean insights into the state of cybersecurity practices across all industries. A breakdown of the data by geographical area and industry sector revealed the following key insights related to Mirai malware:
- Mexico has made an unexpected rise to the top of the list when it comes to countries with infected IoT devices—surpassing eve China.
- The education industry is the sector most affected by Mirai variants in the third quarter of 2017.
- Even a year after the initial release, Mirai botnet infections are still widespread, a troubling indicator poor cybersecurity" should be "a troubling indicator of poor cybersecurity.
