Cryptocurrency is digital, decentralized currency. In the past, cybercriminals primarily just used cryptocurrency to receive money in an anonymized manner. For example, ransomware infections (a type of attack that holds a user’s electronic files hostage until a payment is made) usually request the infected user to pay the ransom in cryptocurrency. However, recently as the market capitalization for all cryptocurrency has surpassed $600 billion, cybercriminals have leveraged this as an opportunity to repurpose existing exploitive techniques to steal cryptocurrency.
