Scorecarder Spotlight: David Mound
Our series “Scorecarder Spotlight” showcases our talented employees and the incredible work they do.
Name: David Mound
Job: Senior Penetration Tester
Location: UK
Where do you live, and what do you do in your free time?
I was born and raised in Stratford Upon Avon but have lived in various parts of the world due to work. I’m now settled back in the Midlands, UK, and definitely prefer the peace of the countryside over the bustle of cities. A fun fact about me is that I was an extra in Ready Player One!
In my free time, I enjoy competing in Capture the Flag competitions, exploring the world of American classic muscle cars, listening to music, and spending time with my family.
Can you talk about your career path?
I got into “hacking” at a young age—around 13 or 14—by participating in different challenges and reverse-engineering software. After leaving high school in 1994, I started an engineering apprenticeship but soon after joined the Navy. During my service, I completed various certifications, including Cisco’s CCNA and the C|EH when it was first introduced. I was also trained as a software developer while serving, and since then, I’ve continued to earn security certifications.
After leaving the Navy, I pursued cybersecurity full-time and got my break after reaching the finals of a national Cyber Security Challenge. That experience helped me showcase my skills and led to opportunities in the industry.
Prior to joining SecurityScorecard, I was consulting and running a training company where I delivered penetration testing classes to entry-level testers.
It wasn’t until the late ’90s that I realized there was a career path for this. What started as a hobby is now a fulfilling career, and I feel fortunate to be doing something I love.
Can you talk about your role at SecurityScorecard?
I am currently a Senior Penetration Tester at SSC, but I also work on threat hunting and threat intelligence, both of which I enjoy deeply. Helping organizations understand their pain points and assisting them in becoming more secure is incredibly rewarding. I love working at SecurityScorecard because of the invaluable data and insights we provide. It allows us to quickly identify risks and respond to emerging threats like zero-day vulnerabilities.
What resonates with me most about SecurityScorecard is how we empower organizations to strengthen their security through data-driven insights. It’s amazing to be part of a company that helps businesses navigate complex threats quickly and effectively, providing clarity in times of uncertainty.
One of my proudest moments was being asked to coach the UK squad for the European Cyber Security Challenge. It was an incredible experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to mentor the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
